More than one-fifth of retailers globally have moved their core business applications to the cloud, according to Forrester's It's Cloud Go Time For Retailers report.
Nearly a third (32 percent) of them have adopted public cloud platforms, including infrastructure-as a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS).
The report also indicated that retailers now expect that their cloud investments will enable infrastructure cost savings, fast and simple scaling for peak shopping periods and access to advanced analytics platforms to derive new customer insights.
They also want tools to improve both customer and employee in-store experiences. This is quite a list as far as expectations are concerned as previously retailers adopted cloud mainly to modernise commerce apps.
According to the report, retailers agree that the rewards of using cloud apps and platforms outweigh the risks, even in the face of concerns around security, privacy, and data ownership. The most important benefits for retailers include extensibility, scalability, access to innovation, and improved availability.
To fully benefit from cloud, Forrester advises retailers to choose trusted partners to develop a winning cloud strategy, and set a top-down cloud strategy to combat cloud cultural biases. Retailers should also tap partners for help and create a comprehensive cloud strategy, not just individual cloud tactics.
